A number of research studies have shown that home ownership provides social and societal benefits. Not only is home ownership one of the best ways to build long-term wealth, providing resources for a more comfortable retirement, but it also fosters an immeasurable sense of community and stability vital to growing families.
NAR’s “Social Benefits of Homeownership and Stable Housing” report reveals that home owners are happier and healthier. They tend to vote more, volunteer more and contribute more to their neighborhoods. Home owners do not move as frequently as renters, which encourages more neighborhood stability, and children of home owners are more likely to participate in organized activities and spend less time in front of the televsion.

For the third time in five years, Huntsville has been honored as a “Playful City USA,” a national program advocating for local policies to increase play opportunities for children. The non-profit organization KaBOOM! created Playful City USA in 2007 to help local governments ensure their children have the time and space they need to play.
Mayor Tommy Battle credits Huntsville’s ranking to his administration’s commitment to prioritize children’s health and welfare through the City’s Parks and Recreation department.
“Childhood obesity is a major social and health problem here in this country,” said Mayor Battle. “Our objective is to have a playground within walking distance of every child in Huntsville so that any child can have unstructured play, anytime, on a safe, state of the art, play ground.”
Only one and five children in the United States lives within walking distance of a playground. That’s not the case in Huntsville. The City currently has 66 public playgrounds, comprised of 42 City of Huntsville parks and 24 Huntsville City School playgrounds.
In the past year alone, Huntsville’s total expenditures for capital projects and improvements of playspaces for children was $275,000. The City’s cost to maintain playspaces was $435,000. In total, that’s more than $700,000 in funds dedicated to improving the mental, social, and physical welfare of our children.
The City, however, can’t do it alone. The EveryBody Can Play Playground in Brahan Spring Park is a testament to the community’s creativity and spirit in helping to provide a handicap-accessible playground for children and adults. Community groups, non-profit organizations and businesses contributed $325,000 for the project.

If you’re searching for a new house, don’t get fooled into purchasing a Huntsville AL home you can’t actually afford. Many new homeowners find themselves in a pickle when they fall in love with a property that has high monthly mortgage payments. Being house poor could lead to a confining quality of life, increased stress and possibly foreclosure.
Before buying a Huntsville AL home, do your research to determine all the actual costs involved with purchasing and owning the home. Without the proper tools and budget, you could be biting off more than you can chew.
Here are four tips to help you get a manageable mortgage:
- Save up – If you’ve saved and can provide a large down payment, you’ll be able take out a smaller loan, which will result in lower monthly payments.
- Check on interest rates – Talk with several lenders to compare interest rates. Also, improve your credit score before purchasing property because your credit score partially determines your loan’s interest rate.
- Decide on the length of the loan – The length of your loan impacts your monthly payments. The shorter the time, the larger your payments will be. Use a mortgage calculator to find out what your monthly payments will be if you go with a 30-year loan versus a 15-year loan.
- Don’t forget the last-minute costs – Put some extra money aside for any additional expenses that come up during the actual purchase, such as closing costs, taxes and homeowner’s insurance.
Save up a down payment for your Huntsville AL home, get pre-approved for a loan, know your limit for monthly mortgage payments and don’t get fooled by the real estate market. Doing the research before you start looking for a house will reduce your stress and help to ensure you have manageable mortgage payments.

Selling a home as a FSBO (for sale by owner) is stressful, but it should never be stressful for your buyers. When lookers come to view your Huntsville AL home you need to make it as stress free and comfortable as possible. Here are a few ways to make your home a place that buyers will want to stay forever:
Open the Door With a Smile:
Invite your viewers into your home with a warm and inviting smile and thank them for coming. That seems like a no-brainer but selling a home as a FSBO is stressful and it often shows on your face and in your attitude, especially after a long weekend of open house showing.
- Bake:
If you love to make cookies now is a good time to fill your home with the wonderful aromas of baked goods—just be sure to share. There’s nothing more disappointing than a mouthwatering smell that isn’t backed up by the goods.
- Don’t Rush Them:
If your schedule is full, you picked a bad time to show your house. When buyers come, let them take all the time they need to walk about your home.
- Leave Them Alone:
No one likes someone looking over their shoulders. Your viewers are not going to feel comfortable discussing your home with each other if you’re standing right next to them.
- Make Sure they’re Comfortable:
Now is not the time for energy saving. Even if you would walk around in a sweater and extra socks to stay warm, don’t expect your buyers to be comfortable with the thermostat turned down. Make sure it’s warm enough in cold weather and cold enough in hot weather for your buyers to feel good about being in your Huntsville AL home.
- Set the Mood:
Start a fire in the fireplace, put on some relaxing music, anything to make your home feel more inviting. Avoid candles or air fresheners because it is impossible to know if your potential buyers have allergies.

Low home prices combined with low interest rates makes this a great time to purchase Huntsville AL real estate investment property. One of the most popular real estate investments is rental property. Investing in rental property can be profitable, if you pick properties that meet the following criteria:
Require minimal maintenance. Huntsville AL real estate with newer appliances, smaller yards and that have been well-maintained, are typically easier and less expensive to continue to maintain.
- Attract long-term, well-paying renters. Your goal is to get renters who will take good care of your Huntsville AL real estate, stay a long time and pay on time. While lower-priced properties near colleges may be easy to rent, they typically attract students who tend to be loud, messy and short term renters. On the other hand, rental properties that are in the highest price range may attract renters who are in jobs that require them to move frequently or who will quickly purchase homes of their own.
- Located in highly-populated, low-crime areas. Steer away from rural areas where there are fewer potential renters. Look for homes in neighborhoods that have low crime rates and good school districts. Neighborhoods near public transportation, grocery stores and shopping malls attract renters.
- Zoned for renting. Always check to be sure the property you intend to lease is approved to be rented by local zoning or home owners’ associations. (more…)
